SUPERIOR HORSE TALK
Equine News for the Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin
Why A Special Magazine for this Area?
Superior Horse Talk magazine was first published in December 1995. Editor Doreen Passuello began publishing the magazine just to fill a void in the horse world in this remote and unique area of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin.

For many years the horsemen and women of the area had been served by a monthly newspaper known as the U.P. Horse News, which was published in  a small, local newspaper office out of Florence, WI. When publishers of the U.P. Horse News ended their very popular paper, horseman and farrier Jack Filkins of Marquette, MI began to publish the U.P. Horse Connection. A few other people also made attempts at publishing area horse news on a smaller scale.  Time constraints, though,  forced Jack Filkins to suspend his publication, and Superior Horse Talk editor Doreen Passuello began thinking about the publishing business.  Jack Filkins was a big help to Doreen in her efforts to get Superior Horse Talk under way.

A life long horseman, Doreen owned and operated a boarding and training stable in Ironwood, MI. It seemed her clients and other area horsemen were always calling to see if she knew when a particiular horse show was, or if she knew about any horses for sale. Being in the horse business herself, Doreen understood the problems of advertising horses or horse events in papers and magazines that were available at the time.  The most popular was the Wisconsin Horseman's News. Though a very good magazine, it focused on mainly southern Wisconsin and even Illinois, a long way away for 'Yooper' horsemen. Doreen had numerous experiences advertsing horses for sale, only to have a caller be dismayed to find out the horse was 4-00 or 500 miles away from them. There definitely was a need for a publication that focused on horses and horsemen closer to home. Thus, the beginning of Superior Horse Talk magazine.

Superior Horse Talk magazine is publsihed every other month, 6 times per year. Although subscription prices have risen modestly over the past 12 years due mainly to postal costs, advertising rates remain at the same low prices they were for the very first issue! The magazine's advertising base continues to grow, providing for additional space for more articles and stories as well. In 2006, Superior Horse Talk began providing FREE classified ads for horses for sale, equipment, tack, trailers and more. These free ads are available to all individuals, the only limitation being length (30 words or less). Business type classified ads (stallions at stud, commercial bussiness ads, stable ads, etc. remain only $5 for a classified ad.

Currently, the magazine is computer printed using a state of the art Xerox 'Solid Ink' printer which produces nearly photo quality colored pages and high quality text as well as 'grayscale' photos and graphics. This printer is also capable of printing both sides of the page at the same time, greatly reducing production time. Superior Horse Talk has made many up-grades through the years, constantly improving quality, speed, and content. The in-house production allows the magazine to be produced with deadlines for advertising and stories very close to publication dates. This keeps the news and ads more timely.  After completion, magazines are bagged in a clear, protective bag, addressed and bundled for U.S Postal Service bulk mailing. Most subscribers receive their magazine 1 to 2 days after mailing.  While the vast majority of magazines go to the U.P and northern Wisconsin, we regualrly sned magazine as far as South Carolina, Texas, and Arizona.
